In the year 1146 the Premonstratensian order built the monastery of Santa María de Retuerta in an unbeatable location on the banks of the Duero. Monks of the order of Saint Norbert were granted terras et vines; and the second abbot brought from Burgundy the first vines of French varieties that were planted. Today we can affirm that the three essential characteristics of the medieval order: work, peace and hospitality, continue to form part of the spirit of the winery.
The work philosophy of Abadía Retuerta is located in the vinification by payments. El suelo de cada una de sus 54 parcelas tiene una composición diferente: arcillas a la orilla del río, arenas on the slope, gravel in the lower layers, limestone on the heights... Therefore, each estate houses a single variety of grapes that must be carefully selected to extract the best from the land.
